Administration Announces Government Worker Job Cuts as Funding Gap Nears Third Week

The White House confirmed the start of government employee layoffs on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official directed the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and whether any government staff had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to carry out firings, referencing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
