The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
